Getting Your Resume Right

Resume Basics

As the market for accounting and finance professionals heats up you may be prompted to dust off your resume and see what new opportunities are out there.  At Ambrion we see a lot of resumes!  As you might expect some are good and some are bad, but there are some key things almost all good resumes contain.  A good resume has key words that show your skills, it shows accomplishments, and finally it should attempt to show that you are more than just a piece of paper (this is the most difficult part in writing a resume).

  • To understand key words to put in your resume look at the job descriptions for the types of positions you want and then take those words and incorporate these into your resume.
  • When showing accomplishments keep in mind the following: made, saved, or achieved.   Potential employers want to know what you made for the company, saved the company, or specifically achieved.  Don’t get caught in the trap where all you are only showing job duties!
  • So, how do you get across that you are more than a piece of paper?  As I stated above, this is the most difficult part in writing a resume and there are certainly different ways of doing it.  From including personal information, to incorporating a summary paragraph at the beginning of your resume that tells your story, what you are trying to show is that you are more than your job duties.  What I suggest is making sure you get involved in something outside of your job.  Do volunteer work, take advantage of educational seminars, and/or get a credential that applies to your field.  Then, make sure you get these items on your resume.

If you follow these simple rules in writing a resume you’ll position yourself to be more successful in your search.  As always, please call us at Ambrion if we can be of assistance in your search!
