Should I take a new job before the new year?

You didn’t even want to click on this post because the idea of adding interviewing for a job to the list of growing holiday demands you’re undertaking right now is beyond overwhelming. However, let us give you a few reasons why taking a new job before the end of the year may be just what you need to make the holiday season cheery and bright.

1.43 percent of employers are planning to hire in Q4
According to a survey commissioned by careerbuilder.com, nearly one half of the employers surveyed plan to add full-time, permanent employees in Q4. More importantly, 73 percent of surveyed employers plan to increase salaries for their full-time, permanent employees hired in Q4. You might think this will mean that there will be more people looking for job in December, however, historically December is the month of the year when fewer people are looking for jobs.

2.Holiday bonus + sign on bonus?
As the first bullet suggests, many employers understand that the war for talent is on, and their plans to hire employees in the fourth quarter is likely going to cost them more. So if you’re worried about leaving before you receive your holiday bonus, talk to your recruiter about the holiday bonus you’re receiving, and they’ll do their best to make sure that your new employer is aware that the perk could hold you back from making a move. Additionally, signing bonuses are coming back in Q4, so it wouldn’t be impossible that your new employer would cover the holiday bonus you’d be receiving from your current employer, plus sweeten the deal with a bonus to start before the new year.

3.A little extra time off
Just imagine, you and your recruiter negotiate a little extra time off around the holidays and you get to start a new role when the calendar turns.

4.You’re so social!
The forced small talk that runs rampant during the holiday season will be less awkward for you, you’ll have your new job to talk about! You’ll automatically have an answer to the standard holiday party conversation question, “So what’s new with you?” And you just might pick up a new colleague in the process. When you’re talking about your new role, you are more likely to hear from a fellow job seeker about what they’re looking for in their next role, or just plainly that they’re going to look for something new next year. This is your chance to introduce them to your recruiter and potentially score a referral fee! Finally, all this forced holiday networking will pay off in more ways than one!

5.You’ll be able to cross a New Year’s Resolution off your list
Let’s just say that for the past five years that the holidays have come and gone and you have failed to accomplish the one resolution you’ve been putting out there, finding a new job in the new year. Instead of waiting until the new year, start exploring now, get to the final interview before the end of December, and feel good about being able to cross a resolution off your list before the year even starts!
