Hiring + Optimism in COVID-19?

04.29.2020

It probably doesn’t feel like hiring could be a bright spot for you right now, but we think you should keep your attitude set to “glass half full” for your future hiring plans this year. Let us give you three reasons for why you can feel confident about hiring right now. Hooray for good news!

Imagine the new work from home possibilities

If your company has promised to look into the option of employees being able to work from home, but hasn’t made any investments to do it, this could be just the opportunity to make it permanent for some employees. If this work from home experiment is going well for your company, and the geographic limitation of where a candidate calls home is removed, you might be able to recruit talent that would have been previously off limits. Imagine the possibilities!

Turnover for good?

It’s never a fun process to have to fire, layoff or furlough employees. And it might seem counterintuitive to think that the end of a job might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to them. However, take a quick spin through your LinkedIn feed right now, and you’ll see dozens of posts about how a job loss didn’t ruin someone’s life, rather it was the best thing that happened to them. We know this is not always the case, but it can be. Additionally, employees moving on whether it was by their choice or the company’s can result in the remaining team pulling together and emerging stronger than ever. When you are able to hire again, the candidate you select will be a different caliber of individual that will need to have the drive, personality and attitude to align with your stronger, better performing team.

Your chance to recruit “impossible to find” candidates

Economic uncertainty can inspire certain people to consider a job search. Some people who had been happy with their jobs and companies when times were good may find that in a less strong economy, their jobs or companies may not be such great places to work. This can mean that talent is available now that would not have been available in the last two, five or ten years.

It’s easy to let the bad news that’s dominating the newscycle take over and affect your outlook on life and the world. But these three examples of positive things that could happen to you if you’re hiring this year are positive results of what’s happening in the world. If you start to get too inundated with the negative, try to take a step back, and seek out some of the positive things that are happening like this, this and this.
